Windows protected your PC: install Lesskeys anyway

Lesskeys for Windows is not code-signed, so Windows shows a warning before the installer runs. Click More info⁠, then Run anyway⁠, and the installer starts.

Install it

How do I install Lesskeys on Windows?

  1. On the download page⁠, choose Download for Windows⁠.
  2. If your browser says the file “isn’t commonly downloaded”: open the download’s … menu › Keep › Show more › Keep anyway⁠.
  3. Run the installer. On “Windows protected your PC”, click More info⁠, then Run anyway⁠.
  4. Finish the installer. Lesskeys starts in the tray, next to the clock.

The warning

Why Windows shows a warning

The installer is not code-signed.

Windows puts the “Windows protected your PC” screen in front of it and asks you to confirm the install; the two clicks above do that. Microsoft says SmartScreen shows a warning for a downloaded file that is not on its list of well-known, often downloaded files (Microsoft: SmartScreen overview⁠).

No Run anyway?

No Run anyway button on Windows 11?

Smart App Control may be turned on.

  • Check: Windows Security › App & browser control › Smart App Control settings.
  • If it says On⁠, you can turn it off there, then run the installer again.
  • Microsoft says: “Recent Windows updates allow Smart App Control to be re-enabled without requiring a clean installation.” (Microsoft: Smart App Control FAQ⁠, read 2026-10-20).
