Privacy Policy
This page explains what information the website and the app collect. The short answer is that your recordings stay on your computer.
Overview
Lesskeys is a voice-to-text transcription application for macOS and Windows that processes all data locally on your device. This privacy policy explains what data Lesskeys accesses and how it is handled.
Data Collection
Lesskeys does not collect, store, transmit, or share any personal data.
- No user accounts or registration required
- No analytics or tracking in the app
- No crash reporting to external services
- No advertising
- No cookies set by the app
- No server-side processing of your audio or text
About this website. The statements above describe the Lesskeys app. This website (lesskeys.com) measures visits in two ways. Our own server counts clicks on the App Store and download links, with no cookie and no identifier. Google Analytics loads on every page: until you choose Allow in the banner it runs without cookies, and only if you allow it does it set analytics cookies. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser. Nothing from inside the app is ever part of this.
Audio Data
Lesskeys accesses your microphone solely to perform voice-to-text transcription. Audio data is:
- Processed entirely on your device using locally-stored AI models
- Never transmitted over the internet
- Never stored permanently — audio buffers are discarded immediately after transcription
- Never shared with any third party
Transcription History
Transcription results are stored locally on your device in the application's support directory. This data:
- Never leaves your device
- Is accessible only to you
- Can be exported or deleted at any time through the app
Clipboard Data
Lesskeys's optional clipboard manager monitors your system clipboard to provide clipboard history functionality. Clipboard data is:
- Stored locally on your device only
- Never transmitted over the internet
- Deletable at any time through the app
AI Models and other network activity
Lesskeys downloads AI models from our model mirror (models.lesskeys.com; some speech models from Hugging Face or GitHub) when you choose them. In a few cases it also downloads without a separate prompt: to finish an interrupted download, to replace a chosen model that is missing from your computer, and to fetch the speaker-recognition models the first time you transcribe a call or file (on Windows, choosing a model in the setup wizard fetches the speaker model too). After models are downloaded:
- Transcription needs no network access
- The app functions completely offline
- No data is sent to model providers
Apart from model downloads, the Mac App Store edition makes no network requests of its own. The direct edition also contacts lesskeys.com to activate a license and to check for updates — see Third-Party Services below.
Permissions
| Permission | Purpose | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Voice recording for transcription | Yes |
| Accessibility | Auto-paste transcribed text (Direct edition only) | Optional |
| Screen Recording | System audio capture for call transcription | Optional |
On Windows, Lesskeys uses the microphone and, for call capture, Windows’ screen and audio capture; both are controlled in Windows’ privacy settings.
Data Storage
All data is stored locally on your computer. On a Mac:
- AI Models:
~/Library/Application Support/Lesskeys/Models/ - Transcription History:
~/Library/Application Support/Lesskeys/ - Clipboard History:
~/Library/Application Support/Lesskeys/ - Recordings:
~/Documents/Lesskeys/ - Preferences: macOS UserDefaults (local)
On Windows: models, history and settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lesskeys\, recordings in Documents\Lesskeys\.
Third-Party Services
Lesskeys does not integrate with, send data to, or receive data from any third-party services, analytics platforms, or advertising networks for product features.
The direct edition (downloaded from lesskeys.com, for Mac or Windows) uses these narrowly-scoped services for billing, licensing and updates only. Your audio, transcripts, recordings and clipboard data are never sent to any of them.
- Creem — our reseller and merchant of record. When you buy Pro, Creem collects what a payment needs (your email, name, billing country or address, and payment details), charges you, handles tax and invoices, and emails you your license key. See Creem’s privacy policy.
- Our license service (
lesskeys.com/api/license) — when you buy inside the app, activate, move or deactivate a license, the app sends the license key, which platform it runs on, and an identifier of this computer (on a Mac its hardware UUID; on Windows a SHA-256 hash of the Windows machine ID). We store only a SHA-256 hash of the key, a salted hash of the computer identifier, and the dates of activations and moves; Creem receives the salted hash as the activation’s name. From Creem’s notifications about each purchase, refund or dispute we keep only Creem’s reference numbers, so a refund can find its license — never your name, email, address or payment details. The license service uses your IP address only to limit abuse and does not store it. - Update checks — the direct Mac app fetches
lesskeys.com/appcast.xmlby itself once a day, and whenever you click Check for Updates; the first check happens when the setup wizard finishes. The Windows app fetcheslesskeys.com/windows/version.jsononce, about 10 seconds after each launch, and when you click Check for Updates. Each check is one plain request that carries only the app’s version — no system profile, never your license key or any identifier. Nothing is installed without your click: on a Mac you choose whether to install an update, and the Windows app only shows a notice with a download link.
The Mac App Store edition uses none of these. Purchases and updates are handled entirely by Apple.
Children's Privacy
Lesskeys does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13.
