How Lesskeys compares to what you’re using now
Sixteen honest side-by-sides, grouped by what you already have. Pick the table that describes your current setup — a Mac app, a meeting assistant, an upload service, a human transcriber, a recorder — and you get the handful of facts that actually decide it. Every one of them ends with where the other tool is the better buy.
·
What all of these come down to
Every tool below makes the same trade in a different direction. Cloud services get your audio onto a fast server and give you summaries, sharing and a phone app in return — but a copy of the conversation exists somewhere you do not administer, and you keep paying while you keep using it. Lesskeys makes the opposite trade: the recording and the transcript live on one Mac, the model runs on that Mac’s GPU, there is no account and no meter — and there are no summaries, no team workspace and no phone app. The tables below are that same sentence, priced.
If you already use a Mac app that runs locally
You have already decided the audio should not leave the machine. What separates these is the pricing model, whether “local” also covers the speaker labels, and whether video is in scope.

| Tool | Runs | You pay | System-wide dictation | Speaker labels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LesskeysMac app | On the Mac, always | Free; $49.99 once | Yes — global hotkey | Yes, on the Mac |
| SuperwhisperMac app | Local models; cloud modes optional | Free plan with unlimited dictation on local models; paid: $8.49/mo, $84.99/yr, or $249.99 once | Yes | Not stated |
| MacWhisperMac app | Local | €64 once (Pro); free edition | Pro edition | Pro; best results via a cloud engine |
| Wispr FlowMac app | Cloud — “transcription always happens in the cloud” | Free plan; paid: $15/user/mo, $12 annual | Yes | Yes, in its notetaker |
Lesskeys is free to download — you can run one of your own recordings through it before you decide anything.
If a bot joins your calls
These five are meeting platforms. They differ from each other on summaries and workspace features; they are alike on the two things people leave over — a visible participant in the call, and a copy of the meeting on someone else’s server. Granola is the honest exception on the first point and not the second, which is worth knowing before you switch.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column →
| Tool | Bot in the call | Audio processed | You pay | Meetings you skip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LesskeysMeeting assistant | No — records system audio | On your Mac | Free; $49.99 once | No — you press record |
| OtterMeeting assistant | Yes | Their cloud | Per-user subscription; free plan 300 min/mo | Yes |
| GranolaMeeting assistant | No — device audio | Transcribes on device, stores in their cloud | $0 / $14 / $35 per user/mo | No |
| FirefliesMeeting assistant | Yes | Their cloud | $18/seat/mo, $10 annual | Yes |
| FathomMeeting assistant | Yes (bot-free is a Mac beta) | Their cloud | $20/mo, $16 annual; free tier unlimited | Yes |
| Read AIMeeting assistant | Yes | Their cloud | $19.75/user/mo, $15 annual | Yes |
The last column is one they win. If you need the meetings you do not attend recorded, Lesskeys cannot do that and a bot can.
If you pay per minute, per hour or per file
Here the cost scales with how much audio you have, and every file makes the trip to someone else’s server and back.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column →
| Tool | Where the file goes | You pay | Free tier | Speaker labels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LesskeysUpload service | Nowhere — stays on the Mac | Free; $49.99 once | Free to download | Yes, on the Mac |
| TurboScribeUpload service | Their servers | See vendor site | See vendor site | Not stated |
| NottaUpload service | Their servers | $8.17/mo billed annually | 120 min/mo | Yes, paid plans |
| SonixUpload service | Their servers | $10/hr, or $25/mo for 5 hrs | 30-minute trial | Yes |
| TrintUpload service | Their servers | Not published — no public price page | Not published | Not published |
| Happy ScribeUpload service | Their servers | €17/mo, €8.50 annual | 10-minute trial | Yes |
Trint publishes no price we could read: its pricing links 404 and the plans page is an empty shell without a browser session. We would rather leave the cell blank than guess.
If a person does the transcribing
This is the one category where the trade is not privacy against convenience. It is a machine against a human being, and on hard audio the human wins.
Swipe the table sideways to see every column →
| Tool | Who transcribes | Where the file goes | You pay | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LesskeysHuman transcription | A model on your Mac's GPU | Nowhere — stays on the Mac | Free; $49.99 once | Volume, privacy, zero marginal cost |
| RevHuman transcription | A person, or their AI | Their servers | $1.99/min for human work; per-seat subscriptions for AI | Hard audio that must be right first time |
If you use a recorder or an editor
These two are not really the same product as Lesskeys, and the table is here to say so rather than to claim a win.

| Tool | What it is | Where audio goes | You pay | Extra hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LesskeysRecorder / editor | A Mac app | Nowhere — stays on the Mac | Free; $49.99 once | No |
| PlaudRecorder / editor | A pocket recorder | Their cloud | Device, plus $17.99/mo (Pro) | Yes — you buy the device |
| DescriptRecorder / editor | An audio/video editor | Their cloud | $24/mo ($16 annual) | No |
Where is each of these the better buy?
Sixteen tools, sixteen honest answers. If one of these describes your situation, buy that one.
- MacWhisper — if you want to drop in YouTube links and podcast feeds, batch whole folders, or run it on an iPhone. It is the deepest file-transcription feature set on the Mac, for one payment.
- Superwhisper — if you want a wide choice of models and dictation modes, and a lifetime licence is worth $249.99 to you.
- Wispr Flow — if you dictate across a Mac, a PC and a phone all day and want the same polished tone-cleanup everywhere. It is cloud, and that is the trade.
- Otter — if a team needs one searchable archive of every meeting, with live sharing and calendar auto-join.
- Granola — if what you actually want is a written summary built around your own typed notes, rather than a verbatim record — and it does it without a bot in the call.
- Fireflies — if you want org-wide meeting search with a real API and CRM plumbing, at a low per-seat price.
- Fathom — if you want unlimited recorded and summarised calls on a free plan. Nothing else on this list gives that away.
- Read AI — if you want the meeting measured — engagement, talk-time, sentiment. That is a different product from a transcript.
- TurboScribe — if you have a backlog of very long recordings; check its current plan limits on its site.
- Notta — if you work across Asian languages or need a bilingual workflow, with bot and bot-free capture in one product.
- Sonix — if you live in the transcript editor — word-level audio sync, glossaries, burned-in subtitles — and want pay-as-you-go for the occasional file.
- Trint — if you are in a newsroom: multi-file story building, verified quotes, collaborative editing.
- Happy Scribe — if you need subtitles and translation at scale, with the option to put a human proofreader on the same file.
- Rev — if the audio is hard and the transcript has to be right the first time. A human still beats every machine on crosstalk, heavy accents and bad rooms.
- Plaud — if you need to capture conversations away from the Mac — a meeting in a corridor, a phone call, a room with no laptop in it.
- Descript — if the transcript is an editing surface and you are cutting the media from it.
What does Lesskeys not do?
This page is worth nothing if it does not say this part. Do not buy Lesskeys if you need:
- A bot that attends meetings you skip. Lesskeys records from your side. If you are not in the call, there is no recording.
- AI summaries and action items. You get a verbatim, speaker-labeled transcript and you decide what it means.
- A shared team workspace. No seats, no shared folders, no comments — because the files never leave the Mac.
- Access from a phone, a PC or a browser. The recordings live on the Mac that made them. That is the trade, not an oversight.
- A human transcriptionist. For hard audio that has to be verbatim first time, a human service is the right tool.
- An Intel Mac. Apple Silicon and macOS 13.0 or later. There is no build for anything else.
If any one of those is load-bearing for you, one of the sixteen tools above is a better buy than this one, and the tables say which.

FAQ
Which of these actually run on my Mac?
Lesskeys and MacWhisper transcribe entirely on the Mac. Superwhisper runs local models with optional cloud modes. Granola transcribes on the device but stores transcripts in its cloud. Everything else on this page sends the audio to a server.
Is there a one-time purchase option anywhere here?
Three: Lesskeys (free to download, $49.99 once to unlock Pro), MacWhisper (€64 once for Pro, with a free edition), and Superwhisper's $249.99 lifetime licence alongside its subscription. Every other tool on this page charges a subscription or per use, though several have a plan at no cost.
Can I transcribe a meeting without a bot joining the call?
Yes. Lesskeys records your Mac's system audio and your microphone from your side of the call, so Zoom, Teams and Meet are just sound on the machine. Granola and Notta also offer bot-free capture, though both still process in their cloud.
What does Lesskeys cost, exactly?
Free to download from the Mac App Store, and $49.99 once to unlock Pro. Not per month, not per minute, not per seat. It needs macOS 13.0 or later on an Apple Silicon Mac.
How current are these prices?
Every figure on this page was last read from the vendor's own pricing page on 14 October 2026, and the sources are listed at the foot of the page. Where a page could not be read, the table says to see the vendor's site. Plans change often, so check before you buy — and where a vendor does not publish a price, we say that instead of guessing.
Does Lesskeys work with Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet?
Yes, with all of them and with anything else that makes sound. It captures system audio plus your microphone locally, so nothing joins the meeting and nothing appears in the participant list.
