Sonix alternative that never uploads your file

Verdict

Sonix is a browser editor for teams that edit and share transcripts, billed by the hour; Lesskeys keeps one person's file and transcript on their own computer.

Illustration with an hour clock in the middle. On the left, Sonix is a browser editor where people edit, comment and share a transcript, billed by the hour. On the right, with Lesskeys, the file stays on one computer and nothing is uploaded.

What Lesskeys does not do that Sonix does

Lesskeys has no web editor or share links.

  • No storage, video or publishing integrations
  • No output in other languages
  • No browser or phone access

It is one person on one computer. The transcripts live on the computer that made them. Whisper can get names and rare words wrong.

Questions

Questions about Sonix and Lesskeys

Is there a Sonix alternative that does not upload my files?

Yes. Lesskeys transcribes on your own computer with Whisper models, so the file is never uploaded. You can test it: disconnect from the internet and transcribe a file.

How does the cost compare with Sonix's hourly billing?

Sonix bills by the hour of audio, with plans that bundle hours; its dated figures are in the table. Lesskeys has no subscription and no hourly charge, because the transcription runs on hardware you already own.

Can Lesskeys turn transcripts into other languages the way Sonix can?

No. Lesskeys writes the speech in the language it was spoken, in 99 languages. If you need other languages as output, Sonix covers that and Lesskeys does not.

What do I need to run Lesskeys instead of Sonix?

A Mac with macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), or a Windows 10 or 11 PC. There is no web version.
