Descript alternative for transcripts on your computer

Verdict

Descript is a cloud editor where you edit video and audio by editing text; Lesskeys is a much smaller tool that keeps the file on your computer and gives you the transcript.

Illustration with sample words. In a Descript-style editor a phrase is struck out of the text and the matching stretch of the timeline is cut: editing the video by editing the text. Below, Lesskeys gives only the transcript with speaker labels, and the cutting happens in your own editor.

Not an editor

What Lesskeys does not do that Descript does

Lesskeys is not an editor.

  • No cutting by deleting words
  • No screen-recording studio
  • No Rooms or team projects
  • No AI summaries

The cutting happens in your own editor. Whisper can get names and rare words wrong, so check anything that matters.

Switching

Try one file before you switch

Start with one interview or podcast file.

Its help lists transcript export as .html, .md, .docx, .txt and .rtf. Save what you need first: Lesskeys cannot import them or open a Descript project.

Tell the people you record; some places require everyone's consent.

Questions

Questions about Descript and Lesskeys

Is there a Descript alternative that works offline?

Yes. Lesskeys transcribes audio and video on your computer, so no media is uploaded, and it works with the internet off once its models are downloaded. Descript's help says it needs an internet connection and does not support offline editing.

Can Lesskeys edit video the way Descript does?

No. Lesskeys is not an editor: there is no timeline and no editing a video by deleting words. It produces a transcript with speaker labels and leaves editing to the tool you already use.

Does Lesskeys charge a subscription like Descript?

No. Lesskeys has no subscription. Descript's plans, with the date they were checked, are in the table.

Can Lesskeys tell speakers apart in an interview?

Yes, on your computer. Labels are automatic, and you can name each voice once so later episodes label themselves.
