Transcribe lectures on your Mac or PC, offline and private

Short answer

Turn a lecture recording into searchable text and dictate notes and essay drafts, on your own computer. Ask before you record a lecture: some teachers and schools do not allow it.

Illustration of a lecture recording and a search. A student with headphones sits beside the sound wave of a lecture recording. Below it a search box fills with a word and two results appear with their times, the word highlighted in each; the playhead on the recording jumps to the first and then to the second result. The lecture and the word are an invented sample.
Sample search, invented lecture. Check names, terms and formulas against the audio.

Three jobs

What a student does with it

  1. Transcribe a lecture recording.

From a phone, a recorder or an online class. A seminar gets a label for each speaker.

    99 languages
  2. Find the moment a term came up.

Search the text, play from that line and copy it into your notes.

  3. Dictate notes or an essay draft.

Add a replacement for a course term that keeps coming out wrong.

Works with MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, MP4, MOV and M4V files. Convert other formats first.

Ask first

May I record a lecture?

Ask first: teachers and schools have their own rules.

Some places require everyone's consent, so tell the people you record.

Your laptop

The recording stays on your laptop

Turned into text on your computer, not uploaded.

Once the speech model is on your computer it needs no internet connection, so it works in a library with no wifi.

  • Nothinguploaded
  • Offlineworks with the internet off
  • No accountneeded

Transcript, not notes

A transcript is not your notes

A transcript is everything that was said. Notes are what you decide matters.

A noisy recording gives a worse transcript, and names, terms and formulas can come out wrong: check them against the audio. Lesskeys does not summarise a lecture.

Questions

Questions about Lesskeys for students

Can students transcribe lectures offline?

Yes. Lesskeys transcribes a lecture recording on your computer, with no upload, and it needs no internet connection once the speech model is on your computer.

Can I transcribe a lecture I already recorded?

Yes. Add the audio or video file and Lesskeys transcribes it on your computer, with speaker labels for seminars with several people.

Can I dictate an essay with it?

Yes. Click into your document, dictate and paste the text. Lesskeys writes down what you say, so you edit it afterwards; it does not write the essay.
