Offline transcription for research and UX interviews

Short answer

A researcher, including a UX researcher, turns interview, focus-group and usability-session recordings into transcripts with a label for each speaker, on their own computer. The participant audio is not uploaded; your consent form and your institution's rules still decide what you may do with it.

Illustration of a focus group. A moderator and three participants sit around a table with a recorder in the middle, and each one lights up as they speak. Beside the table the transcript fills line by line with a label on each speaker, and the labels Speaker 1 to 4 are renamed Moderator, P1, P2 and P3. The words are an invented sample.
Sample session, invented words and participant codes. Check anything you quote against the audio.

Three jobs

What a researcher does with it

  1. Transcribe interviews and focus groups.

Rename the labels to participant codes.

    99 languages
  2. Record a remote interview.

No bot joins. A participant you have named can be recognised in a later session.

  3. Go back to the audio behind a quote.

Play from the line you are coding, then copy the text into the tool you analyse in.

Works with MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, MP4, MOV and M4V files. Convert other formats first.

Name the moderator and the participant once.

Record a remote session on your computer, or add the recording from your research tool. You can capture the screen or a window next to the audio. Your agreement with the client or company decides what you may record.

Participant audio

Participant audio stays on your computer

Turned into text on your computer, not uploaded.

Follow your consent form and your institution's data-handling and ethics rules: Lesskeys cannot check them.

All at once

When everyone talks at once

In a focus group, a label can be wrong and a word can be missed.

You set how many people spoke (2 by default). Names, jargon and accented speech can come out wrong, so check anything you quote against the audio.

Questions

Questions about Lesskeys for researchers

Can I transcribe research interviews offline?

Yes. Lesskeys transcribes interviews and focus groups on your computer, so participant audio is not uploaded, and it needs no internet connection once the speech model is on your computer.

Does it separate several participants?

Yes. You set how many people spoke (2 by default), and you can rename the labels. Labels can be wrong when voices overlap, so check them.

Can I transcribe interviews in other languages?

Yes, it detects the language among 99. Accuracy differs between languages, so have someone who speaks the language check the quotes you cite.
