Dictation on Mac

How to dictate on a Mac, and what to do when it stops working

Every Mac has dictation built in. This page sets it up, fixes the four things that usually break it, and says plainly where a dedicated app earns its place.

How do you turn on dictation on a Mac?

Dictation ships with macOS and costs nothing. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation and switch it on. In the same pane you choose the shortcut that starts it — the microphone key on recent keyboards, or Control pressed twice — and add the languages you intend to speak. Once it is on, the shortcut works in any text field: Mail, Notes, a browser, a terminal.

That is the whole setup, and for a short reply it is genuinely all you need. What follows is what to do when it does not behave, and what a dedicated app adds once you are dictating all day rather than a sentence at a time.

Why is dictation not working on your Mac?

Four things explain most of it, and all four are free to check before you install anything.

If all four are right and it still misbehaves, the problem is usually not the setup: it is that built-in dictation is designed for short bursts, and gets less reliable the longer you talk.

What is the dictation shortcut on a Mac?

Whatever you set it to. macOS offers the microphone key or a double-press of Control, and lets you pick a custom combination. Lesskeys uses its own global shortcut, ⌥ ., so the two never collide — and it is changeable too, for anyone whose muscle memory already belongs to something else.

Why does local dictation matter once you dictate all day?

A sentence into a search box is not the same job as dictating a clinical note, a client file or an unpublished draft. At that point two things start to matter: whether the audio is leaving the machine, and whether there is a meter running.

Lesskeys does the whole thing on your own Mac. A speech model runs on the GPU, the text lands on your clipboard, and one ⌘V puts it where the cursor already was. There is no account, no per-minute charge, and no network call once the model is in place — it works with the Wi-Fi off.

What does a dedicated app add?

If all you want is to dictate a short message, the dictation already on your Mac is free and fine, and we would rather say so. Compare the Mac dictation apps before deciding anything.

FAQ

How do I turn on dictation on a Mac?

Open System Settings, then Keyboard, then Dictation, and switch it on. In the same pane you pick the shortcut that starts it and add the languages you intend to speak. It then works in any text field.

Why is my Mac dictation not working?

Usually one of four things: the Dictation shortcut is set to Off, the language you are speaking was never added to its list, the Mac is listening to a Bluetooth headset instead of the built-in microphone, or microphone permission was declined in Privacy & Security.

What is the keyboard shortcut for dictation on a Mac?

Whatever you set it to in System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation — macOS offers the microphone key or a double-press of Control. Lesskeys uses its own global shortcut, Option and Period, which is also changeable.

Does dictation on a Mac work without the internet?

The dictation built into macOS depends on your language and settings. Lesskeys runs the speech model on your own Mac, so once the model is downloaded it works with the network off and nothing is uploaded.

Is there a time limit on dictation?

Lesskeys puts no limit on how long you speak. The free download meters five minutes of dictation a day, plus five audio and five video transcriptions in total; the one-time $49.99 purchase removes those limits.
